According to Nutrition Business Journal, this was up from $11.9 billion in 2004, but still a drop in the bucket in the $500 billion U.S. food industry.

The USDA rules allow manufacturers to use 38 synthetic ingredients in foods and label them organic provided they are not more than 5% of the food's composition.
