On Aug. 20, 1953, Alfred Kinsey released the second volume of his groundbreaking study on sexual behavior, this one focusing on the human female. Based on 6,000 interviews with American women, Kinsey concluded that 28% of American women had at some point been sexually attracted to another female.

In "Sexual Behavior In the Human Male", Albert Kinsey's 1948 study of interviews with 12,000 males, Kinsey reported that 37% of American males reported that they had had at least one homosexual experience leading to orgasm. Over any given three-year period, 18% of the men surveyed in the Kinsey Report said they had as much homosexual as heterosexual contact, while 8% acknowledged being exclusively homosexual.
