The first Moose Club was inaugurated by Dr. John Henry Wilson, a Louisville, Ky., physician in the parlor of his home. Today, the Loyal Order of Moose has 1.4 million members, including 500,000 Women of the Moose.

1870
Formed by 13 regulars at New York's Knickerbocker Restaurant who wanted to create an organization that was less formal and more fun than the Masons, the organization (known for its members outlandish hats) now has about 450,000 members nationally, who support 22 hospitals.

Original name for the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks:
The Jolly Corks
Started in 1868 by a group of New York City actors as a drinking club, the Elks quickly became a charitable organization when the actors started putting on benefit performances for the families of deceased colleagues. Today, the Elks have approximately 1.1 million members in 2,100 lodges across the U.S.

Widely known as the genius club, Mensa is open to any individual who scores in the top 2% in a standardized intelligence test.
Mensa was founded in 1946 in England. In Latin, mensa means "mind", "table", and "month."
