Year bubble wrap invented:
1957
Bubble wrap was invented by New Jersey engineers Albert Fielding and Marc Chavannes who, with the goal of creating wallpaper, sealed two shower curtains together. When no one bought that idea, they marketed their invention as greenhouse insulation, again with no luck. In 1960, however, invention and use met. IBM had recently come out with the 1401, one of the world's first mass-produced business computers, and a marketer named Frederick Bowers convinced the company that Bubble Wrap was the perfect way to protect the computer in transit. Perhaps one of the most unusual uses for bubble wrap was by Farrah Fawcett, who appeared on the July 1997 cover of Playboy clad only in the protecting material.
