Where Does the Name Alfa Romeo Come From?

0

The Alfa Romeo brand has existed for a long time now. Despite the longevity of the brand and the high level of recognition it enjoys, there is still a lot of things many people do not know about the Alfa Romeo name. For Alfa Romeo sales Manhattan is the place to be. But, whether you are looking to buy or already own one of these amazing vehicles, you may find some of the following facts about the company’s name surprising or enlightening.

The Company Was Not Always Called Alfa Romeo

When French businessman and investor, Alexandre Darracq, along with his investors, established the car company in 1906, they chose the name, SocietàAnonimaItalianaDarracq (SAID). Translated, this means something like Anonymous Italian Company Darracq. In this case, the Society Anonymous or S.A. means a type of corporation.

The brand sold the Italian Darracq automobiles. Unfortunately, sales of the Darracq models were not doing too well. The group decided to hire a new designer and relaunched a new company under a new name, ALFA.

The Alfa Part of the Name is an Acronym

People have grown accustomed to saying Alfa Romeo, but really, the ALFA is an acronym for AnonimaLombardaFabbricaAutomobili. Translated, this means Lombardy Anonymous Automobile Factory, or something along those lines. The factory, located in Lombardy, Milan specifically, produced new models designed by the now-famous car engineer, Giuseppe Merosi.

This was a turning point for the manufacturer. The new designs and models did better and ALFA started to venture into motorsport. In addition, these new vehicles were not Darracqs, although the ALFA company was still technically part of or partner of the original SAID. However, the name change to ALFA only lasted for a few years.

The Romeo Part of the Name Came Later

Around 1915, an engineer and entrepreneur named Nicola Romeo purchased a majority stake in ALFA. A few years later, Nicola owned the company completely. Nicola initially found success with a company that produced mining equipment. The first vehicles to carry the full Alfa Romeo name came out in 1921.

The company saw increased success, but the good times did not last too long. In 1927, Alfa Romeo came close to complete failure. The investors asked Nicola to step down.

The Alfa Romeo Name Means More than Sum of Its Parts

The Alfa Romeo line has a long history and its name has become synonymous with motorsport and racing. Most people automatically recognize the iconic logo of the manufacturer and understand that it represents history, quality, and artistry.
